Smart Descriptions: Let Fine Art Form Write for You
4 min read

Writing about your own work is hard. Fine Art Form's Smart Descriptions feature analyzes your artwork image and generates three polished, professional descriptions in seconds — so you spend your time making art, not staring at a blank text box.
What are Smart Descriptions?
Smart Descriptions are AI-generated artwork descriptions created from your uploaded image and basic metadata (title, medium, dimensions). Fine Art Form analyzes your artwork and produces three distinct variants:
- Casual — Warm, approachable, and conversational. Great for social media, your portfolio site, and general collector audiences.
- Formal — Gallery-ready, technically precise, and professional. Ideal for grant applications, exhibition submissions, and consignment forms.
- Poetic — Evocative, expressive, and literary. Perfect for collectors who connect emotionally with art, or for high-end sales contexts.
You choose the variant that fits your voice, edit it if you like, and save. The whole process takes under two minutes.
Before You Start
Smart Descriptions require:
- A Pro or Premium plan
- An uploaded image on the artwork
Free plan users can try Smart Descriptions up to 10 times per month. After that, you'll need to upgrade to Pro for unlimited access. See plan details →
No image yet? Smart Descriptions analyze your image, so you'll need to upload one first. Learn how to add your first artwork →
How to Generate a Description
Step 1: Open the artwork edit page
From your dashboard, click any artwork to open it. Then click Edit to open the edit form.
Quick tip: Make sure your artwork has an image uploaded and a title filled in before generating — the more context Fine Art Form has, the better your description will be.
Step 2: Click "Generate Smart Description"
Scroll down to the Description field. Below it, you'll see the Generate Smart Description ✨ button.
If you're on the Free plan, you'll see a badge showing how many generations you have left this month (e.g., "7 remaining this month").
Click the button to start.
Step 3: Wait a few seconds
Fine Art Form will analyze your image. You'll see a brief loading message: "Analyzing your artwork..."
This usually takes 5–8 seconds. Please don't close the page while it's working.
Step 4: Review your three variants
Three description variants will appear — Casual, Formal, and Poetic. Click each tab to read them.
Take your time. Read each one out loud if it helps. Think about where this description will be used and which tone fits best.
Example for an abstract digital painting in blues and oranges:
Casual: This vibrant digital piece bursts with energy and color, where bold blues and fiery oranges collide in a dance of gestural brushstrokes. The composition feels spontaneous yet intentional — sweeping marks guide the eye across the canvas in a dynamic rhythm. It's a celebration of pure color and movement.
Formal: A large-format digital painting exploring the tension between complementary colors through expressive, gestural mark-making. The artist employs a palette of cool blues and warm oranges, creating visual dynamism through chromatic contrast and energetic brushwork. The composition suggests emotional immediacy while maintaining structural coherence.
Poetic: Like a captured moment between day and night, this piece exists where sky meets horizon. Electric blues pour across the surface like water finding its path, while bursts of orange bloom like distant fires — warm and alive. Each brushstroke is a conversation between control and abandon.
Step 5: Choose and refine
Click Use This Description on the variant you prefer. The text will appear in the Description field, ready to edit.
This is your starting point, not a final draft. Feel free to:
- Add personal context ("This piece was created during my residency in Oaxaca...")
- Adjust any details the AI got wrong
- Blend two variants — take the opening from Casual, the closing from Poetic
- Use it exactly as-is if it already says what you want
Step 6: Save your artwork
When you're happy with the description, click Save Artwork. Your description is now live on your artwork record and portfolio site.
Not Happy with the First Draft?
Click Regenerate to get a fresh set of variants. Each regeneration counts as one generation toward your monthly limit if you're on the Free plan.
Tips for better results:
- Make sure your image is high resolution and well-lit — blurry or dark images produce vaguer descriptions
- Fill in the medium, dimensions, and year before generating — these details help Fine Art Form write more accurately
- Try regenerating once or twice if the first output feels too generic; abstract and minimal works sometimes need a second attempt
Bulk Generation (Pro and Premium)
If you have a large catalog to work through, you can generate descriptions for multiple artworks at once.
- From your artwork catalog, select the artworks you want to describe using the checkboxes
- Click Actions → Generate Smart Descriptions
- A progress window will show how many descriptions have been completed
- Once finished, review and edit each description from the individual artwork pages
Bulk generation uses the Casual variant by default. You can switch to a different variant on each artwork after the batch is complete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will collectors know the description was AI-assisted? No — Smart Descriptions are a writing tool, not a label. Just like using a thesaurus or hiring a copywriter, the goal is to help you communicate your work effectively. The description represents your artwork; how you draft it is up to you.
Can I use the same description on multiple platforms? Yes. Once saved to Fine Art Form, your description is yours to use anywhere — your portfolio site, gallery submissions, social media, print catalogs, anywhere.
Why does the description mention details that aren't quite right? Smart Descriptions are generated from your image and the metadata you've entered. If the medium, dimensions, or style feel off, try filling in more metadata fields before regenerating. You can also edit the description directly — the AI gives you a starting point.
Does generating a description change my artwork? No. Generating a Smart Description doesn't save anything — it only populates the description field. Nothing is saved until you click Save Artwork.
What if I run out of free generations? Free plan users get 10 Smart Description generations per month. Once you've used all 10, the button will be disabled until next month — or you can upgrade to Pro for unlimited generations.
I'm on Free. Can I still edit descriptions manually? Yes — the Description field is always available for manual writing, regardless of your plan. Smart Descriptions are an optional tool to speed up the process.
